Aussie MP says financial crisis is an “Act of God”

Labour MP James Bidgood has started his political career in the best of ways. First he tried to sell photos of a protester attempting to immolate himself outside Parliament house, then argues that a march by Christians in London back in April of 1987 caused the financial meltdown later that year and draws similar conclusions for the current global financial crisis. I am not sure how Mr. Bidgood links these seemingly two separate events – perhaps it’s divine revelation?

Mr. Bidgood also states:

“when Christians pray, God does things”

This makes as much sense as saying:

“When the ancient Greek prayed to Apollo he danced a jig.”

Whatever mate.

The scariest part of his speech contains the following words:

“…if you believe the word of God and you read Revelations…you will see clearly what is being spelt out. We in the end times.”

Guess what, pal. I don’t believe the Bible is the word of God anymore than you believe the Koran is the word of Allah or Dianetics is the word of Xenu. Furthermore, I have read Revelations and it occurs to me the shepherd drank some really bad goat’s milk that night.

In any case, it is clear the Mr. Bidgood has lost all grip on reality. The honourable member is clearly basing his policy decisions on the supernatural in a vain attempt to please a non-existant deity. I for one would rather my political representation to deal with concerns in this life rather than the next, and concentrate of solving the difficult issues we face without resorting to dropping onto his knees and begging for forgiveness. You may find this odd, but I prefer real data and evidence to base decisions on, not the deranged writings of ignorant, sexist, bigoted, violent, tribal, goat herders who lived in another country 2,000 years ago.

The sooner Mr. Bidgood is removed from office the better, and it seems I am not alone in this view.

Persecuting Christians

The other day I was discussing the merits of nutrition for the prevention and treatment of cancer, when a good friend of mine accused me of “persecuting Christians”.  The comment may have been flippantly fired off without much thought, but it stuck with me for a few days.  Do I really persecute Christians? While I’ve…

Dog Heads

The excellent British broadcaster BBC 4 recently aired a fascinating program called “The Medieval Mind” which explores the philosophy, theology, and predominate thinking of the dark ages.  The first episode deals with knowledge and revealed numerous intriguing insights into how the medieval mind determined epistemological truths. Monks, priests, and other godly people were in possession…

The perfect God

I want a god whose ultimate goals which do not necessitate the creation of mysterious suffering and death. I want a god who doesn’t violate causation by causing things to begin to exist from nothing in the absence of time. I want a god who does not give us “free will” then punishes us for…

Atheism 2.0

“Atheism 2.0” is a 20 minute TED presentation by Alain de Botton in which he proposes a new approach to evangelising atheism. Alain suggests (apparently without evidence) that we have “secularised badly” and we should sift through the rituals, traditions, and behaviours of religion to identify and adopt their efficient mechanisms. “I have come here…

The Bizarre Bible

Atheists are often told by believers to read the Bible and it will all become clear.  Trouble is, many of us have tried that and it doesn’t seem to have helped.  Take these verses for example: This does not sound like a great night out to me. “But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master…
