At some stage I set up an account on godtube. I have been meaning to close the ignored account, but occasionally they send me emails on the latest featured items. This month they sent the following:
This classic Christmas carol is considered by many historians to have been written as an instructional tool for Christians in 16th century England. Some dispute this origin and consider it simply an urban myth. Fact or fiction aside, we believe this carol can definitely be used to celebrate the true meaning of the season and it’s with that spirit that we share with you this “interpretation” that’s been hidden for centuries within the lyrics of this beloved carol.
One phrase in this single paragraph sums it all of for me very nicely:

So there we have it. No matter what the facts are, not matter if they are true or not, we are going to act as if they are absolutely true and contain deeper, subtle, hidden, meanings into the true meaning of the season. We will never let things like facts or verifiable truths get in our way – we can just wave our magic wand and declare it to be so. Such is the way of religion.
