Not the atheists greatest argument

Ray Comfort is up to his usual tricks. In his latest post he ignores the argument at hand to head off on his usual tangent – let’s have a look.

A reader asks:

“A man rapes and murders a twelve year old atheist girl; brutally tortures her for weeks then slowly murders her. Afterwards he regrets his action and repents and trusts in Christ for salvation he will have eternal Bliss. Meanwhile his little victim will be damned to hell because he murdered her before she found Christ. That is what your God says . . . Even the very rapist murderers I despise so much are a million times more moral than the cruel storm God who rewards them for no greater deed than asking his forgiveness . . . ” Ryk

To which Ray responds:

It seems that nothing angers an atheist like the thought that any murdering child molester could be forgiven by God. It is normal for him to create a scenario such as the above, where the girl goes to Hell and the monster goes to Heaven. Then sparks are spat at God, because in his mind He is the real evil One in the story, because He is unjust.

Ray, it’s not that God is the real evil character in this story, it is that he has configured a system which permits rapists and murderers to receive the eternal bliss of Heaven while their victims are condemned to eternal suffering. This is held up by believers as the pinnacle of morality – something to which we should all aspire.

If we were to build a society based on these values, then rapists and murderers would be granted a life long stay at a 5 star tropical paradise resort if they were truly sorry for their actions and asked for forgiveness. Their victims (assuming they are still alive) would be tossed into the street and ignored. This is justice?

The fact you actually believe this is perfect, moral, ethical, and just indicates you actually have no morality whatsoever.

But why is the atheist so angry at God (whom he doesn’t believe exists). It is because the atheist intuitively demands justice. As a rational human being he has the moral Law stamped on his conscience. That’s why. It’s not his “social conditioning” that caused the outrage. Every sane human being has a God-given conscience no matter what he is taught by society. No other creature other than man has this–not apes, dogs, cattle, sheep goats, fish, horses or cats. Only human beings seek justice, and demand retribution for that which is considered evil. What the professing atheist thinks is his greatest argument against God, is his greatest argument for God.

No Ray, I don’t believe God exists – not even the barbaric character of Yahweh as portrayed in the Bible. The point here is that if such a character existed he would certainly not be moral or just. I do not need to believe Batman’s Joker exists in order to make judgements on his character.

Other animals exhibit behaviour which we may label fair, just, or altruistic (as the video in my previous post illustrates). This type of behaviour completely undoes your assertion that no other creature has a conscience.

There are perfectly rational ways in which morality can evolve within a species, but no doubt you would reject those in favour of your predetermined bias – God gave us morality and no amount of evidence will persuade you otherwise. This is exactly the hypocritical closed mindedness you accuse atheists of.

The perfect God

I want a god whose ultimate goals which do not necessitate the creation of mysterious suffering and death. I want a god who doesn’t violate causation by causing things to begin to exist from nothing in the absence of time. I want a god who does not give us “free will” then punishes us for…

Atheism 2.0

“Atheism 2.0” is a 20 minute TED presentation by Alain de Botton in which he proposes a new approach to evangelising atheism. Alain suggests (apparently without evidence) that we have “secularised badly” and we should sift through the rituals, traditions, and behaviours of religion to identify and adopt their efficient mechanisms. “I have come here…

The Bizarre Bible

Atheists are often told by believers to read the Bible and it will all become clear.  Trouble is, many of us have tried that and it doesn’t seem to have helped.  Take these verses for example: This does not sound like a great night out to me. “But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master…
