Ray’s an Oxymoron

In Ray Comfort’s latest post he once again displays his incredible ignorance on the subject of evolution and seems horrible confused as to which account (Genesis or evolution) is a fairy tale.

A reader by the name of Mojo asks the following questions:

“Dear Ray, Why is it so difficult for you to accept the fact of evolution when it has been universally accepted by the scientific community, and 99.99% of people who dedicate their lives to studying it? Why do you refuse to acknowledge that there are many very very serious bible believing Christians who claim to know God but also accept the fact of evolution? Why is it so difficult for you to think that if your God existed, he might be working through science instead of directly violating it? It merely makes the story of Genesis One allegorical, describing man’s relationship with Jehovah rather then a literal account of how the world was made. Why, Ray, why, you constantly attack scientific discourse with a bumptious attitude, yet you do not let us know the real reasons for it, why?”

Seems like a reasonable request. Let’s see what Ray has to say:

Let me deal with your questions one by one. First, I strongly contest your 99.99%. You are saying that only .01% who study evolution don’t believe it. I think you greatly exaggerate your figures. Still, never forget that there was a time when 100 % of the scientific community thought that the earth was flat. The majority must be right is a fallacy. Only God is right all the time.

Since Ray (as usual) has not cited any reference, poll, or study to back up his claim (and to be fair, neither did Mojo). There are some lists in circulation which claim to have the signatories of many scientists who doubt the theory of evolution – the most prominent of which is the one published by The Discovery Institute. Even IF this list is accurate, it still only represents approximately 0.002% of the scientific community in America – hardly a majority.

When the list is examined in greater detail we find many of the names listed are not biologists (would would have knowledge of what the theory of evolution actually is), are not scientists at all, or actually do accept evolution as fact. Many have repeatedly asked for their names to be removed from this fraudulent list. DonExodus2 (a Christian who accepts the theory of evolution) has a great video on Youtube on this exact topic – I suggest you check it out.

Second, no Bible “believing” Christian accepts evolution. Such a thought is an oxymoron. To believe evolution means that the “Christian” doesn’t believe the words of Jesus, when He said, “In the beginning God made them male and female” (see Matthew 19:4). To believe that God made mankind through the process of evolution means that youdon’t believe Bible.

Sorry Ray, as I pointed out earlier there are plenty of Christians who accept the theory of evolution as fact: DonExodus2 is one example, as are Ken Miller and Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D – both prominent scientists and firm believers.

All that is required to accept both evolution and Genesis is to treat the later as allegory; a poetic rendition of the origins of the universe and life according to the Biblical authors. No one is required to reject the Bible, or worship Satan to accept evolution anymore that accepting germ theory does.

Here’s a question for you: Why do Darwinian believers insist on hiding behind the cloak of “science,” when their theory isn’t scientific in the slightest? It’s nothing more than a pseudo science–a fairy tale for grownups, believed by the gullible, and created by the imaginations of secular speculators.

Hello Pot, this is Kettle

The predictions evolution makes have been pointed out to Ray time and time again, but he refuses to shift his position away from the straw man he has created for himself. I do not mind ignorance (I am ignorant of many things), but at least I attempt to see things from another’s perspective. What I really despise are people who simply refuse to learn, and Ray is a wonderful example of this.

In truth, a magical man who lives in the clouds who created everything from nothing at all, man from dust, woman from one of his ribs, planted magic trees in a paradise garden and a talking snake, then punishes humanity for all time because the women was tricked is the real fairy tale here. There is simply no evidence for any of it – how could there be?

Here’s the bottom line: When anyone comes to know God through the new birth (see John 3:3-5), the issue is dead in the water. I can never convince you that Genesis is the truth, but you can know the truth yourself through repentance and trust in Jesus Christ.

Well OK, let’s have a look at what John 3:3-5 says:

3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Come on Ray – this is a bit of a stretch. Jesus seems to be saying here that only those who are baptised can enter the Kingdom of God. The passage says nothing about understanding the arguments, or those who do not accept his words will be blinded to the truth. It certainly says nothing about the changes in biological populations over time.

Of course, Ray does not mean it in this way. Ray wants you to believe that those who accept evolution (and therefore reject a literal interpretation of Genesis) are not true Christians. Once again he falls for the no true Scotsman fallacy.

If you are interested, read John 8:31-32.

Yes Ray, I am interested. John 8:31-32 reads:

8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

The truth is evolution is supported by an incredible amount of evidence and accepting it does not turn you into a baby eating atheist.

ACL lie about census

The Australian Christian Lobby are lying again. The excellent British broadcaster BBC 4 recently aired a fascinating program called “The Medieval Mind” which explores the philosophy, theology, and predominate thinking of the dark ages.  The first episode deals with knowledge and revealed numerous intriguing insights into how the medieval mind determined epistemological truths. I flagged this video a few days ago, but only watched it this evening. It’s is not often we see ex-muslims speaking out against the “religion of peace”. What these people have done is extraordinary and brave given the fundamentalists attraction to extreme violence.

The perfect God

“Atheism 2.0” is a 20 minute TED presentation by Alain de Botton in which he proposes a new approach to evangelising atheism. The Bizarre Bible

Atheists are often told by believers to read the Bible and it will all become clear.  Trouble is, many of us have tried that and it doesn’t seem to have helped.  Take these verses for example: This does not sound like a great night out to me. “But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master [...]
