1.2.5 – Electric Dowsing Rods

When we sat down for our second podcast we had a lot to talk about.  So much, in fact, that we could not fit in in one glorious episode.  That, and the fact we think people aren’t interested in listening to us for more than 1 and a half hours.  So, here is a bonus mini episode where we chat we had about military dowsing rods and trials by ordeal.

I agree it's really scary that somebody can trick the US military into using dowsing rods. I wonder if it was just some bureaucrat who approved them without letting the soldiers test them for accuracy, thought it wouldn't be the first time our military has funneled millions into faulty equipment. There was another controversy a few weeks ago here in the states where a company manufacturing gun scopes was printing bible verses on them. ( http://godlesspaladin.wordpress.com/ ) Yeah, that's smart; go to an Islamic country who's people you're trying to win over, and shoot them up with Christian bible verses on your scopes…. Our military, like the rest of the country, is pretty religious too. Atheists in the military are often denied promotions and harassed by their fellow soldiers. Christian proselytizers have a very strong grip on the military. ( http://www.secular.org/issues/chaplains )

There was a high profile case of this a few years back when an American football player, Pat Tillman, left an extremely well paying job as a player and joined the military. He was killed by friendly fire and seen as a national hero, until it was discovered that he, and his family, were Atheists. A military officer then ridiculed the family and said they couldn't be a peace because he had no faith. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP4h4WwX0NI )

What's the scariest for us up here in the Northern hemisphere is that Sarah Palin might get elected president in 2012. She's an anti-evolution/anti-woman's rights/ pro-war religious fundamentalist who doesn't even know basic geography. She also believes that the war in Iraq is god's will ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H-btXPfhGs ). She also belongs to a group of Americans who believe that Jesus will return and trigger Armageddon within their lifetime, but to do that, there must be a massive war between the Jews and the rest of the world. (This is why there is such a powerful Pro-Jewish Christian lobby in the US, they don't want peace, they want the apocalypse. Palin is one of these people (and so are a handful of others in our gov. (Bush was one) and this is the type of person who might be at the helm of the most powerful military on earth, not to mention our nukes…)

Thanks Godless Palidin. While I am aware of many of the stories you posted here, many of our listeners might not be. If we get a chance I will bring them up in future episodes.

“Atheism 2.0” is a 20 minute TED presentation by Alain de Botton in which he proposes a new approach to evangelising atheism. The Bizarre Bible

Atheists are often told by believers to read the Bible and it will all become clear.  Trouble is, many of us have tried that and it doesn’t seem to have helped.  Take these verses for example: This does not sound like a great night out to me. “But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master…
