BUSY.

This was work, a job that I was doing, essentially. A wonderful and much-appreciated opportunity, absolutely – but as anyone will tell you who works in event management / stage presentations / promotions (you may very well do!)… the glam and gloss is just a reflection of the hard-yards people were putting in behind the scenes to make it appear that way.

I wore kitten-heels the first day and was nearly crawling by the end of the night due to all the running around. Hence the glittery but distinctly comfortable flats I wore on the Sunday! Backstage is always a different story and of course, technical issues and the like are fairly inevitable for any event. I would have very much felt more nervous and hectic if it wasn't for the wonderful people I was working with who have been setting the scene for months before this actually happened. :) Would absolutely do it again if I got to work with the same crew. :)

Always keeping an eye and ear open for effective and interesting speakers to get more tips – took a book with me (which I recommended to another scientist after the con and will be sending them the details) about 'effectively communicating your research'. Naturally, I'm still learning in that regard, but to see 'how Dawkins does it?' Priceless. :)

He's really very nice, a little formal – after all, there's a significant generation gap between him and most of us! He was kind of playful after the convention at a party we went to – he can handle his Vegemite much better than PZ. :p
