Interfaith01 makes an attempt

As a reasonably well known atheist in some circles, I do attract my share of theists concerned for the fate of my eternal soul (what ever that is).  For example, take someone who goes by the Youtube name of “Interfaith01” who posted the following helpful information on my profile overnight:

“God is alive. I know God exists, I know without any doubt.” – Interfaith01

This is terrifying news.  If the incompetent, jealous, and megalomaniacal God of the Old Testament is real and still alive then we will all be forced to choose between eternal servitude and suffering.  No thanks.

“If you believe or not, it makes no difference, you will be judged.” – Interfaith01

I understand Interfaith01 believes there is a God, and this God is accurately portrayed by the stories contained within the Bible, however I am not certain as to *why* he considers the Bible to be factually correct in relation to these claims.  This statement suggests he believes to please his God and avoid the torments of Hell.

“After you die do you really want Jesus to say to you, “Go away, I never knew you.” – Interfaith01

Much has been written of whether Jesus was an actual historical figure or a complete fabrication, but these often miss the central point.  Are the miraculous claims of healing, walking on water, feeding the masses, being resurrected, and ascending into Heaven historical facts?  To be sure these are fantastic claims which demand exceedingly great evidence to demonstrate.  Unfortunately, I do not consider stories initially passed around orally, written down by anonymous authors, copied, translated, edited, selected and compiled for their theological views, distributed, and translated again and again to be the kind of evidence that would convince me.

“Hell is more real than it is here, the colors are more vivid, and the feeling of pain, terror and utter hopelessness much more intense, this world is just like a dream in comparison.” – Interfaith01

How does he actually know this to be the case?  Even extrapolating various Bible passages to form this view does not make it any more realistic than the Viking myths of Valhalla.  These kinds of tactic are nothing more than a scare campaign of an ancient blood cult – believe or suffer greatly!  While we are lucky to be living in an age where Church authorities cannot inflict temporal suffering, the central doctrine of punishment and pain remain.

“If you want to find out more about God and are serious about it, just go into a private room, ask Jesus “is God real”, ask Jesus to show you the truth, you might be very surprised by the result.” – Interfaith01

While I am happy to do this, I doubt I will be surprised by the results for I have done similar things in the past.  The more important question is why I should be asking Jesus if God is real; why not ask Apollo, Baal, or Luke Skywalker?

I appreciate the place this concern for my well being comes from.  Interfaith01 is probably a decent, empathetic person who does not wish his fellow man to suffer unnecessarily.  Unfortunately, his humanity has been hijacked by an insidious, twisted, and evil cult.

Still, at least Interfatih01 tried to present a reasoned argument – he could have just as easily presented the “argument” Youtube user Pedeatrick supplied:

“God exists you asshole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” – Pedeatrick

Father Bob and Aronra

This week I meet with Aronra in Melbourne for the Global Atheist Convention, and thought it would be a good idea to chat up with Australia’s most popular secular humanist Catholic Father Bob for a chat.  Strap yourself in for this one.

This is a continuation of my reply to Andrew Finden’s “one last philosophical hurrah” post, and addresses the question “why believe there is a god?” It is encouraging to read the opening statement of this section where Andrew admits “that one can cannot prove that God exists”, however he quickly (and rightly) dismisses philosophical materialism…

Those who have been following this blog for a while will, no doubt, recall the various discussions/debates/arguments I have had with Andrew Finden in the past. As frustrating as I find them at times, I think he often tackles interesting and difficult topics with a calm intelligence not very often found in the religious debate. This…

Dear Mr. Swan,

Wayne Swan is currently having meeting to finalise the Australian federal budget.  In these tough economic times it is more important than ever to ensure your hard earned tax dollar is being spent in the most effective and efficient manner.  In view of this I can think of one poorly thought out federal program which,…

Poor Pell

Last Monday on Australia’s ABC television network the jet-lagged evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins squared off against Catholic Cardinal George Pell on the “Q and A” program with unimpressive results. A transcript of the entire show can be found in the ABC’s web site. The level of intellectual debate on this episode of Q and A…
