911

“From the first moment I looked into that horror on September 11th, into that fireball, into that explosion of horror, I knew it, I recognized an old companion. I recognized religion.”
-Monsignor Lorenzo Albacete (1941-)

“I’m not convinced that faith can move mountains, but I’ve seen what it can do to skyscrapers.”
- William Gascoyne

“On Tuesday September 11, 2001, at least 35 000 people died from the worst possible death, starvation. Somewhere around 85% of these starvation deaths occur in children 5 years of age or younger. Starvation doesn’t just happen on Tuesday September 11, 2001, it happens everyday, 365 days per year, 24 hours per day, it never stops”
- Jarek Loovali

“Science flies you to the moon. Religion flies you into buildings.”
-Victor Stenger

“Many of us saw religion as harmless nonsense. Beliefs might lack all supporting evidence but, we thought, if people needed a crutch for consolation, where’s the harm? September 11th changed all that. Revealed faith is not harmless nonsense, it can be lethally dangerous nonsense. Dangerous because it gives people unshakeable confidence in their own righteousness. Dangerous because it gives them false courage to kill themselves, which automatically removes normal barriers to killing others. Dangerous because it teaches enmity to others labelled only by a difference of inherited tradition. And dangerous because we have all bought into into a weird respect, which uniquely protects religion from normal criticism. Let’s now stop being so damned respectful!”
- Richard Dawkins

9/11 was not carried out solely on the basis of religion it is mainly to do with political drama, corruption and serving one own’s purpose in self destruction and using the name of religion to mask and cover up the real issues/problems these sad people had. Therefore religion is the easy target for blame when the individuals carried out such terrible and horrific acts.

Being a Muslim there’s no where in the Quran it says to kill innocent people whether a believer or disbeliver as God has made human life sacred. Also suicide is completely forbidden in Islam. Therefore suicide bombing or any form of killing for no real reason (unless in self defense) is condemned and a evil act.
These people may of taken the verses out of context in the scripture to serve their own purpose as a human being but that is no excuse. These people probably have not read the Quran properly or not at all and were influence by extremist leaders and just believed in what they preached and through hearsay just to serve their agenda in a perverted and distorted way.

Therefore more Muslims and people of faith need to come out more and condemn such actions and join together as people to understand what religion and the Quran really teaches in a positive light if that person is willing to learn. As it says in the scripture’ there is no compulsion in religion’.

    Peace

The problem with talking about ‘religion’ like this is that it’s a false plural which falsely assumes that all religion is the same, when it isn’t. Not all religion is good, some is bad, some is very bad. But then, so is some literature, and some science…

Yes, 9/11 had a huge dose of religious motivation (but also a huge dose of political motivation.. but let’s not let nuance and details get in the way of a good rant, eh?) and was, no doubt, a catalyst for the so-called ‘New Atheism’ rise in popularity, but I think most have moved beyond such simplistic thinking on the issue.

Religious motivation from where exactly? because the Quran doesn’t teach to kill innocent people and kill themselves they must of got it from somewhere else to fit in with their true warped beliefs.

So which religions are bad? Do you admit there are good religions out there?

Have you studied religions in detail?

I’m an evangelical Christian.. @askegg:disqus would have assumed that I think there is some good religious views out there.

        • http://godless.biz Andrew Skegg

Yes there are good religious views out there, but more by accident than by design.

The Quran calls for heathens, infidels, apostates to be murdered, and glorifies fighting and dying in the name of Allah.  Many fanatics use these passages to find people with different views “guilty” and justifcation to wage war.

No where in the Quran it says to kill disbelievers unless in war and if they are attacking you and refuse to keep peace. If a peace treaty is created between to two parties then war is not permissible. People like to take verses out of context to serve their own purpose.

          • http://godless.biz Andrew Skegg

That may be your interpretation, and I am sure you truly believe you are correct.  However, there are those who will find justification in the pages of the Quran to commit terrifying acts.  911 is one such example.  Don’t feel victimised – it happen whenever a holy book replaces reason, logic, and evidence. In other words – religions.

Father Bob and Aronra

This week I meet with Aronra in Melbourne for the Global Atheist Convention, and thought it would be a good idea to chat up with Australia’s most popular secular humanist Catholic Father Bob for a chat.  Strap yourself in for this one.

This is a continuation of my reply to Andrew Finden’s “one last philosophical hurrah” post, and addresses the question “why believe there is a god?” It is encouraging to read the opening statement of this section where Andrew admits “that one can cannot prove that God exists”, however he quickly (and rightly) dismisses philosophical materialism…

Those who have been following this blog for a while will, no doubt, recall the various discussions/debates/arguments I have had with Andrew Finden in the past. As frustrating as I find them at times, I think he often tackles interesting and difficult topics with a calm intelligence not very often found in the religious debate. This…

Dear Mr. Swan,

Wayne Swan is currently having meeting to finalise the Australian federal budget.  In these tough economic times it is more important than ever to ensure your hard earned tax dollar is being spent in the most effective and efficient manner.  In view of this I can think of one poorly thought out federal program which,…

Poor Pell

Last Monday on Australia’s ABC television network the jet-lagged evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins squared off against Catholic Cardinal George Pell on the “Q and A” program with unimpressive results. A transcript of the entire show can be found in the ABC’s web site. The level of intellectual debate on this episode of Q and A…
