45 – Suffer in your jocks

Ollie and Andrew contend with abusive and threatening Christians, absolute morality, fine scotch, and a noisy pussy.  All in a day’s work.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the science actually lines up with the “egg as a person” politicians.  You pointed out that a sperm is needed therefore there should be a similar “sperm as a person” clause.  However scientists have induced parthenogenesis in mammals and have taken the process to at least the stem cell level in humans.  So the possibility of a perfect clone of the mother is possible without a sperm being in sight.  The reverse is not possible.

Doesn’t alter the idiocy of the bill one whit, mind you, since they’re not basing it on that all (nor should they).  But a fun train of thought to follow as a now obsolete male.

I take it you mean an unfertilised egg can develop into a fully grown adult? I must admit, this is news to me, however I maintain the position that a fertilised egg is not sufficient to be called “human”; even though it is biologically a human egg.  There are other attributes we should consider in the abortion debate – this thread might interest you. http://www.godless.biz/2012/02/17/thoughts-on-isought/

Being male, I often feel redundant.

Can?  Probably not at present.  But the implication is there as I think that other mammalian unfertilized eggs have developed into full adults of the species.

I agree with you on the issue.  Only presented this tidbit of information partially to amuse.  Partially to inform.  Partially because I am finally caught up and wanted to post something a tad more relevant than another twitter comment on Ollie’s disappointing performance on the pedo-priest front.

I’ll tell him to lift his game.  Might be a while before our next episode as I am very busy with work at the moment :-(

Father Bob and Aronra

This week I meet with Aronra in Melbourne for the Global Atheist Convention, and thought it would be a good idea to chat up with Australia’s most popular secular humanist Catholic Father Bob for a chat.  Strap yourself in for this one.

This is a continuation of my reply to Andrew Finden’s “one last philosophical hurrah” post, and addresses the question “why believe there is a god?” It is encouraging to read the opening statement of this section where Andrew admits “that one can cannot prove that God exists”, however he quickly (and rightly) dismisses philosophical materialism…

Those who have been following this blog for a while will, no doubt, recall the various discussions/debates/arguments I have had with Andrew Finden in the past. As frustrating as I find them at times, I think he often tackles interesting and difficult topics with a calm intelligence not very often found in the religious debate. This…

Dear Mr. Swan,

Wayne Swan is currently having meeting to finalise the Australian federal budget.  In these tough economic times it is more important than ever to ensure your hard earned tax dollar is being spent in the most effective and efficient manner.  In view of this I can think of one poorly thought out federal program which,…

Poor Pell

Last Monday on Australia’s ABC television network the jet-lagged evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins squared off against Catholic Cardinal George Pell on the “Q and A” program with unimpressive results. A transcript of the entire show can be found in the ABC’s web site. The level of intellectual debate on this episode of Q and A…
