Disproving the existence of Hell

Welcome to HellIs hell the absence of God?  No – it can’t be and I will try and explain why.

According to the Christian faith God created everything from nothing at all. He just spoke and it all came into being ex nihilo. It is interesting to note that theists often use this as a reason why they do not believe in the big bang.   anyway, there are two possibilities here – God literally created everything from nothing  or God created everything from the only “thing” that existed at the time – himself.

If the first is true, then God (being perfect) deliberately created a place where he did not exist, nor was interested in.

If the second is true, then God IS everywhere and he IS everything – including in hell.

Since the second option seems unpalatable to many theists since it destroys the idea of hell being a place separated from god, so we will not consider a viable option.

This would mean an all knowing and all loving being deliberatly created a place where he did not exist, from nothing at all.  Hey, he’s God so he can do whatever he likes – right?

What kind of all loving being creates a place where he is not, then punishes those who do not follow him by throwing them into that area of his creation?  This seems incompatible with the nature of God, hence he either cannot be all loving, or all knowing.  This destroys the concept of God that many theists hold.

Before anyone suggests that we choose hell because of our free will to sin against God, then I ask

“Why can’t your God predict the results of giving us free will”?

Did he deliberately and perfectly decide to impose a kind of self-amnesia to see what would happen? Would he be able to predict the results of doing this before he even started?

It seems dealing with absolutes is not a very good idea.  I would recommend everyone should steer clear of them.

Punishing Puppets

gorlilla_puppetI recently realized another flaw in the Abrahamic religions.

Suppose for a moment that the Christians are right. Now, image a man spends his entire life devoted to Christ, spending all his days at a Church and following the Bible. But one day when he is an old man, he decides to convert to Islam. Two minutes after his decision he is hit by a car and killed. He goes to heaven, finds the Christians are right, and is sent to hell for eternity, despite his lifetime commitment to Christianity.

Yet according to the Christians, they believe god is omnipotent, so he has control over what happens to that man. So wasn’t god completely in charge of whether or not that man would go to heaven or hell? Had he had the car hit him two minutes earlier, he would have sent him to heaven for an eternity of bliss. But in just two minutes, god decided to send him to suffer an eternity of unfathomable agony in the bowels of hell.

Whereas imagine that the Muslims are right, and a man spends his entire life devoted to Christianity, but has a similar epiphany two minutes before he dies and becomes Muslim, and ends up in heaven. Once again it’s not a person who gets themselves into heaven, but god who manipulates those people on whether or not they get into heaven.

If a deity exists, he controls whether or not they are born into a culture or family that worships him, and controls whether or not the person discovers him.

So in the end, if there is a god, more specifically a god of a certain religion, he himself is entirely responsible for who gets into heaven through how he manipulates what happens on Earth. So why send puppets to heaven or hell for what they have no control over?

Jews are going to hell

The Sydney Morning Herald has posted an article about a Baptist Pastor who informed Jewish leaders they were going to hell and would face a fate worse than the holocaust.  He goes on to clarify his position based on Biblical passages:

“The Bible says that all have sinned and all are worthy of hell.  That includes everyone, until we receive Jesus as our saviour”

While is approach may seem brutally abrupt, know one can honestly disagree with the core tenants of his beliefs.  Jesus himself said in John 14:6

“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Decent people may feel uncomfortable with this line of reasoning, and so they should.  The doctrine of eternal salvation which can only be obtained by accepting the dogma of a particular religion is dangerous, divisive, and an open attacks on others faith.

Shifting another persons beliefs in any other aspect of our experience requires evidence supporting your case and demonstrating logical arguments to your conclusion.  Since no religion can really lay claim to the ultimate truth (although all do), there can never be resolution on these matter.

Religion has managed to remain immune from criticism and ridicule for far too long.  It is time to expose these ideas for what they truly are – baseless, worthless, wishful thinking stemming from the dark recesses of our ignorance for millennia.
