Smooth Ground

Three men are walking through the woods, when the first comments on how smooth the ground is, and how nice it is to walk on. The second one tells him that his grandfather told him stories about how aliens came along in ancient times and they’re spaceships made the ground flatter. The third one than calls him foolish, saying that his own father told him stories of thousands of intelligent rabbits who went to work making the path smooth.
The first man chuckles at the other two’s stories.

“Why are you laughing?” says the second one. “What’s YOUR reason for why this trail is smooth?” The first one admitted that he didn’t know, but enjoyed it nonetheless. “Well, if you don’t know, then my story must be right!” exclaims the third traveler. “No, MY story must be right, because it was told by my grandfather, who was here much longer before your father!” says the second. “Are you joking? There are obviously rabbits in the world, so MINE must be right!” replies the third.
The first traveler walks ahead to avoid their arguing and just enjoy the trail, while the other two get so angered at eachother that they end up killing eachother over who’s story is right. .
The End.

Christmas

A few days ago I was debating with a Christian friend of mine, and he made the claim that atheists “don’t get as much out of life as Christians do.” Of course that was a grossly biased statement, but I decided to reply to it with this

Back when I was younger and still believed in Santa, Christmas became more about getting the reward from the man who supposedly knew whether I was “naughty or nice”. During the few weeks prior to Christmas, I would be exceptionally nice to others, not because I wanted to, but because I wanted Santa to see that I deserved something good. Yet as time passed and I grew out of that childish fantasy, Christmas turned more into a time for enjoying family and those dear to me, rather than snagging rewards from that magical man.

So no, I told him, Christians do not get “more” out of life than atheists do. If anything, atheists enjoy it far more, because we accept that it’s the only one we have, and we’d rather use it to it’s best, rather than try to reap rewards from a character from bronze-age mythology. How could you possibly enjoy life if you spend it preparing for when it’s over?

An Evil God?

From Unreasonable Faith:

It (the Bible) can be used to support slavery (Paul says “slaves, obey your masters with fear and trembling … as you would Christ”) and human dignity (Jesus says “love your neighbor as yourself”); misogynism (Paul says “women are not permitted to speak [in church], but should be in submission,”) and equality (Paul says “there is no male or female … you are all one”); in obeying government (Paul says “let every person be subject to the governing authorities”) and disobeying government (The apostles refused to obey the Roman authorities saying they “must obey God rather than man”)

Try being his son!

“I know that very early on [my father] was under the influence of those drugs,” Nate said. Pastor Phelps was attending law school and would take amphetamines to stay awake and barbiturates to come down. “It spiralled out of control [and he] was prone toward violence….He just wasn’t tolerant toward the presence of all of us kids running around—and the accompanying noise….He would beat the kids with his fists and kick them and knee them in the stomach.

This is an enlightening interview with the son on Fred Phelps, the crazy pastor from the Westboro Baptist Church.  Just see what a self confessed “man of God” is capable of.

A typical conversation

Theist – “Everything we see has a cause, so everything MUST have a cause.”

Rational thinker – “So it follows that there is an infinite causal chain, which our finite minds cannot comprehend.”

Theist – “NO! There was an uncaused cause which started it all, and I call this God”

Rational thinker – “I thought you just said that everything MUST have a cause? What caused God?”

Theist – “Nothing. He exists beyond space and time and operates in a plane that is immune from causal chains”

Rational thinker – “How could you determine if that really is true or not, and how many planes which are immune from casual chains exist?”

Theist – “I have faith”

Rational thinker – “That’s not very logical”

Theist – “Yeah, well your being irrational and you’re obviously biased against my views!”
